Largest thermal rollers for 10 years

23.01.2020

For 200 years now, we have been casting and manufacturing hard cast rolls in Siegerland. This special material, which has of course been further developed today, is used primarily in the paper industry. We are a specialist and market leader for the worldwide demand for these complex and sensitive large calender rolls.

The two peripherally drilled thermal rollers (DuoTherm) over 14 m long with a diameter of 1.35 m and a finished weight of 80 t each are the largest rolls manufactured for the paper industry for over 10 years. The casting mass required for this is approx. 100 t and is not common even for WALZEN IRLE.

To produce writing, printing and copying paper with a width of up to 10.5 m, this roller runs in the paper calendar at a production speed of approx. 1800 m/min. This requires perfect round accuracy down to the µm range and absolutely smooth running (without imbalance) in the built-in calender. The oil-heated rollers remove the last water from the calendered paper and produce the required paper surface quality. The second large roller made of our special cast iron serves as a replacement roller.

It takes up to 12 months to complete a roller of this size and type, from casting to final grinding. In November 2019, the first of the two large rollers for the paper industry was delivered. The “sister roller” is due for delivery at the end of January.

Rotate 70 t: The rollers get a final finish. The bearing and bearing housing (approx. 10 t) are then assembled.
